by Maggie Stiefvater
At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them. Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

The second I started this book I was catapulted onto the Island of Thisby surrounded by crashing waves and huge wild water horses thrashing around, the air potent with the salt water smell and the smell of blood...the blood of riders and the race. Stiefvater is such a powerful writer that she will take you into her world and you can see, smell and feel everything that the characters do. This story was so different from anything I have ever read and I loved it. My only negative was the difficult pronunciation of the capaill uisce -the wild water horses. But really, i'm not sure that is even a negative worth detailing. This story is not one to miss...sure you might think, water horses...really? why would I want to read that...But I'm telling you, this is a powerful book written by a brilliant writer who has yet to disappoint.
